Monthly Meeting: Finding Pathways for Indigenous-led Conservation in Northeast Ontario

The First Unitarian Church of Hamilton

• 170 Dundurn St. S., Hamilton Ontario L8P 4K3, Canada

About

Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island have distinct visions for how their land should be cared for and protected, and the role of Indigenous Peoples in protecting biodiversity has been well documented. However, Indigenous objectives for the land are often at odds with provincial policy in Ontario, and this creates barriers for communities in the form of funding stalls, jurisdictional disputes, and poor relationships. Hear from Elena McCulloch about how Wahkohtowin Development – an Indigenous organization owned by three First Nations in Northeast Ontario – is navigating these challenges and finding strategies to advance Indigenous-led conservation through community-based processes and building good relationships with allies, leading to the creation and success of an Indigenous land trust organization in an unlikely environment.
