What Is World Vegan Day?
World Vegan Day takes place annually on November 1. It was established in England in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then President of The Vegan Society, to celebrate the organization’s 50th anniversary.
Wallis chose November 1 because it falls between Halloween on October 31 and Mexico’s Day of the Dead on November 2. The occasion was created to recognize the vegan movement and celebrate the growing recognition of the word “vegan.”
Today, World Vegan Day offers an opportunity for people around the world to explore plant-based food, learn about veganism and celebrate the many ways it can be part of everyday life.
World Vegan Day is an opportunity to celebrate plant-based food and learn more about the organizations supporting veganism around the world. In Canada, the Vegan Society of Canada is a registered charitable organization that promotes veganism through public education, outreach, information resources and vegan certification for eligible products and businesses. Its mission includes protecting the environment and supporting the health of humans and animals. As World Vegan Day brings people together to explore plant-based choices, celebrations like this one at Hamilton Farmers’ Market offer a delicious way to discover vegan options, support local businesses and learn more about the growing variety of plant-based foods available.
Hamilton Farmers’ Market is bringing the celebration forward by one day in 2026, giving visitors another delicious reason to spend Halloween Saturday exploring downtown Hamilton.
