About

Mimi O’Bonsawin (pronounced: MEE-MEE O-BON-SA-WIN) is a contemporary roots singer-songwriter from Northeastern Ontario. She is French Canadian and W8banaki (Abénaki), a member of the Odanak First Nation. Through her rhythm and story-driven songs, Mimi’s music embraces the beauty of the land. The ethereal quality of her music whisks you away with uplifting melodies and introspective lyrics that weave pop sensitivities with acoustic instruments. The layers of percussion and surprising harmonies make you feel the music rather than just hear it. Her stage performances are honest and dynamic as she tours with her partner Ryan Schurman on drums, making it an intimate yet uplifting experience for the audience. They recently added Anthony King on lead guitar into the mix. Drawing on his years of touring with Internationally recognized artists, he adds layers of atmosphere and energy to their full band sound. Mimi’s 2023 album Willow features her four singles, Here’s to the Women , I am Alive, I Wish I Was a Farmer and The River . Like her previous release, and first instrumental album Fiddleheads & Ferns (2022), the album was produced and recorded in Mimi and Ryan’s log home studio. In May 2025, Mimi was awarded Solo Artist of the Year at the Trille Or Awards . Earlier in the year, she toured Australia with performances at the Woodford and Cygnet Folk Festivals . After a winter hard at work on her next album, she spent the summer on the road with her band at Festivals across Canada Including Vancouver Folk Festival, Mission Folk Festival, Francos de Montréal, Festival en Chanson Petite-Vallée and was invited by Elisapie to perform on the TV series Le Grand-Solstice airing Nationally on Ici-Télé & APTN.

At the heart of great songwriting is great storytelling. For The North Sound , songs declare joy, a hallmark of yearning, and a tender tale of honesty. Yet amidst the rawness, trials, and tribulations, there are notes of hope and happiness. This is the duo at their best: Sharing stories in the way they know how. Forged deep in Treaty 7 Territory, where the prairies rush towards the foothills, The North Sound is a partnership between lead singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Forrest Eaglespeaker and vocalist and composer Nevada Eaglespeaker. A fusion of authentic voices, crisp harmonies, and rollicking/burgeoning indie folk-roots rock, the duo — a married couple — weave and wend through themes of family and connection, recovery, and addiction. As partners who play and write together, the themes of family, love, and sacrifice are inescapable — in their shared sojourn, Forrest and Nevada have forged the core of a rock-solid collaboration. At the heart and soul of the group is an incredible story of two people who stuck it out and found a collective voice to breathe life into tribulations and traditions. The topics of their stories aren’t necessarily light — they might hit you in the gut. But they also aim to make you sing along as well. While Forrest's voice guides the listeners through intergenerational trauma, the duo lets their audiences relate in their own way. It’s when The North Sound play live that the intimacy and honesty shines through.
