Special Q+A screening with director and co-writer Brian Ceci!
Hearing is a fundamental component to the way society is structured. We’ve built infrastructure, activities, culture and of course, communication based on the ability to hear. And on the other end of our spectrum, society has seen Deaf individuals develop a sophisticated language and culture built around Deafness. That leaves a gap between two distinct cultures where many Hard of Hearing (HoH) people lie. The array of this space is vast. Many people go through life with one sided or Unilateral hearing loss, others are missing specific tones, rendering specific sounds that are crucial for human speech. And others do not have the ability to hear at all, but have acquired cochlear implants to hear.
HEARD profiles Hard of Hearing (HoH) creatives across British Columbia who use their hearing loss to further their practice as artists and creatives. Guided by HoH filmmaker Brian Ceci, the film visually explores the everyday lived experiences in a dramatic and comedic way, contextualizing for the audience what it’s truly like to live with hearing loss.
Brian Ceci
For Brian, growing up Hard of Hearing was something was seldom acknowledged, but clearly a very important part of daily life. Brian’s career evolved in a more visual medium unfolded much later, catapulting him all over the world, documenting the human condition with his camera. Brian has shot numerous documentaries as a Director of Photography on networks like Discovery +, OMNI,and Telus Originals. The idea of leaning into his hearing came much later, through a series of events over decades which ultimately led to this film’s creation.
Brian’s hope is that this film will help people understand the limitations of hearing loss across it’s spectrum, whilst helping empowering people on their journey with with their own hearing.
