About

Join Marcus Buck observing moths at Summit Bog. Marcus will be demonstrating the use of light traps to observe and photograph moths and other nocturnal insects. Equipment, books, and methods for passively observing moths will be discussed. Participants are welcome to photograph moths with a cell phone or camera with flash. Moths will start arriving after dusk and gradually build up in numbers as the evening progresses. Good numbers should be present by 11:00 pm. This is an excellent site for a diverse variety of moths and we may see as many as 500 moths at this site!

Park at the Rail Trail Parking lot on the east side of Highway 52 ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y5GntmETnfKB6xER6 ). The parking fee is $11.50 per vehicle, or free with an HCA membership pass.

We will congregate at the parking lot at 9:15 pm and walk 350 m north along the rail trail. The rail trail is gravel and flat, but we will walk 100 m off of the trail through forest. Good hiking footwear is recommended.

Bring a headlamp or flashlight, and insect repellent. Mosquitos can be abundant at this site, so some participants may wish to wear a bug jacket or headnet.

In case of inclement weather, this event may be rescheduled to July 11 or 12. Only participants who have RSVP’d will be notified of any rescheduled dates, if applicable
