Note that the time and location have changed!
Join Marcus Buck at the Headwaters Trail (Dundas Valley Conservation Area) for a nighttime adventure! Marcus will be demonstrating the use of light traps to observe and photograph moths and other nocturnal insects. Equipment, books, and methods for passively observing moths will be discussed. Participants are welcome to photograph moths with a cell phone, or camera with flash. Moths will start arriving at twilight and gradually build up in numbers as the evening progresses. Good numbers should be present by 11:00 pm. This is an excellent site for a diverse variety of moths and I recently observed 1,000 moths at this site in a single night! And we may hear owls and coyotes!
Parking and meeting instructions have been emailed to registrants.
The trail is dirt and/or gravel and there may be some muddy spots after rain. Good hiking footwear is recommended.
Bring a headlamp or flashlight (required), and insect repellent. There are few mosquitos at this site. Participants can leave when they wish, and we can organize small groups to leave together for participants who prefer that. The route out will be marked with reflective tape on stakes at trail junctions.
In case of inclement weather, this event may be rescheduled to July 11 or 12. Only participants who have RSVP’d will be notified of any rescheduled dates, if applicable
